NEWSLETTER 13

25th January 2011

Dear Parents,

This newsletter has been sent out in paper form as well as is usual on the internet to remind you please to check the website bes-edu.org regularly for the updated news and list of future events.

The Newsletters can be viewed by clicking the small envelope icon on the right hand side of the homepage. We keep several past letters on the page so if you have missed something you can look back. We have added the dates for the rest of this term and at the bottom right is an item which if you click you can read the project written by one of our students on Recycling in Libya. There are also lots of new photographs of activities including the Christmas Bazaar on the front page and many more in the Gallery.

We are still having a problem with students not being collected at the proper times after school. If they are not registered to take part in an official after school activity they should be collected by 3.35pm. If they are taking part in an official afterschool activity they must be collected by 4.35pm. It is not acceptable for members of staff, who have plans and families of their own, to have to wait with one or two students. If there is a change to the usual arrangements these must be agreed with the office in advance and unless you hear directly from school, there will be no changes to finishing times made by us.

May I remind you that this term’s fees are now overdue and must be paid to the office as soon as possible please. Any outstanding payments for the visit to Athens should also be paid as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

The School debating competition begins today with the first motion being

“Downloading music from the internet is wrong.”

I hope this will encourage students to think more deeply about topics they should find relevant to their world. Being able to include participation in a debating competition on a student’s CV is something universities look for to show the student has an inquiring mind. It is often a topic for interviews too.

Yours sincerely,

Director.

NEWSLETTER 12.

January 13th 2011

We welcome everyone back after the Christmas break and I am pleased to report we have a full staff ready to provide the work needed to help students achieve their best exam results. However it is important that students do the work that is set for homework and take care to ensure it is their best. They need to set aside enough time and a quiet place so they can concentrate and ensure they are answering the question that has been asked!

ATHENS TRIP

I would like to remind you that the money for the trip to Athens was due to be paid by the 10th January and must be with Gina by the end of this week so we can start to plan the schedule the applications for visas.

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

The list of activities being offered this term has been given to students who should sign up for their choices as soon as possible. We are including a Debating Competition this term and these will take place under usual debating Society rules

at lunchtimes on Wednesdays. It is necessary that any student taking part in an activity after school has brought a letter from home to prove that parents agree to them participating and agree to collect them at 4.30pm. This last point is very important as it is not fair to Mr. Keith to be kept here until 5pm and sometimes later because one or two students  have been left. You will be notified by letter of any activity which finishes after this time and we will have told you the time students need collecting . Please ignore any verbal changes students tell you as they may be planning something which school knows nothing about!

SCHOOL FEES

A reminder that the school fees for this term are due to be received in the office by 20th January 2011.

BES ART DEPARTMENT CALENDARS

The Art department has produced a beautiful 2011 calendar using art work done by BES students for their art exams. These are available to buy at 15 LD each from the school office.

NEWSLETTER 11

CHRISTMAS BAZAAR.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make this year’s Christmas Bazaar one of the best we have had. The schools were full of parents, past and present students, friends and relatives. The concert was enjoyed by a packed hall of people and the buying and selling went on for two hours. The food was wonderful and we are very grateful for all the support from families to provide food from so many cultures. There were many good prizes and the auction was generously supported.

VISIT TO ATHENS.

The letter has gone out to students from Year 10 upwards informing parents of our planned trip to Athens in March 2011. It is important that the reply slip is returned by Thursday so a firm booking can be made and the price agreed. We are hoping this trip will provide opportunity for extended work in history, art and literature as well as being an enjoyable experience for our students.

VISIT BY REPRESENTATIVE OF NEW YORK UNIVERSITY, ABU DHABI CAMPUS.

On Monday 13th December we have a visit from a representative of the new campus in Abu Dhabi of the University of New York USA. She is coming to speak to students from Year 11 upwards about study opportunities on this new campus and about the requirements for entry.

This is the first of a programme of careers and study support we are introducing for the older students to help them make the important life choices which are rapidly approaching.

END OF TERM

We close at 12.55 pm on Thursday 16th December and reopen at 7.55am on Sunday January 9th 2011. Students in years 11, 12 and 13 have important exams as soon as we return and should be spending several hours a day on revision tasks and study.

The Director
